This. Was. 2020. My best wedding photography of 2020 in two formats. For the video lovers, it’s all here in just over 3 minutes. For the more old-school amongst you, the images are below.
A year where everything stopped, the world held its breath. let it out, and then took an even deeper one. A year when this bastard virus took so much from us all, people, places, memories. A year that, despite the absolute carnage of my industry being laid to waste, I somehow managed to still shoot 14 weddings. Still scratching my head at just how many of the people you see below managed to often squeak in by a day or two as the shutters came down again and they tried to plan on quicksand.
A year that started in early January when we just had the first whisper of a weird illness in China, and which finished in late December as we hurtled into Tier 4 and then the abyss of Lockdown No.3, but with vaccines on the horizon this time. I managed to shoot 3 full weddings before that first lockdown, the last one just one week before it hit us, and that first week saw me come down with COVID-19. 3 weeks later I was recovered, a time that mercifully was classed as a mild case, but with the newness and uncertainty not one I’d be in any hurry to repeat. I think my senses of taste and and smell still weren’t fully back for about 4 months, and the fatigue was bone-crushingly awful when it hit.
The pause until August, as this thing swept the world. Images of places we know that we’ll never forget. The streets of our cities silenced. We emerged, blinking into the light. Weddings were back. The sun shone hard. People met again. Pubs and restaurants were busy, just a bit different. Was it over? Not quite. August, September and October were a rush. In all senses. How did it feel to be out there shooting again? Utterly. Brilliant. I love this job. It’s all I want to do, and I’m good at it. The people you see below are why I love it so much and crave for the return of what we all know and want.
So, to Amy and Dave, Chloe and Rich, Floss and Mark, Kate and Rob, Francesca and Alex, Fran and Harry, Rachel and Matt, Annaleise and Andrew, Emily and Cameron, Emma and Tom, Tori and Ed, Laura and Reyan, and Grace and Ali. You were my stars of 2020. Some of you rolled with multiples punches and still got it done. You were beyond brilliant, and I thank every one of you for trusting me with your days, this year more than ever. I hope I did you all proud. You’ll be seeing much more of most of them as they have the big days they want later this year.
For now, we hold our breath again. We look after our neighbours. We wait. Life is out there, just not what we want right now. But it will be back, and, I think, with a vengeance. Epic, full, life lies ahead. I don’t know what this post for 2021 will look like yet. I have incredible couples who have been bounced from date to date as this all unfolds, but who are all hanging in there. There is now not just more tunnel at the end of the tunnel. We see light. Hold each other close where you can. We can all breathe out soon and when it comes it’ll be a flood. Let’s all swim in it together. To my 41 2021 couples, you have been magnificent and the days you deserve are surely coming.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
